CARY, NC (May/23/2018) – Thermo Fisher Scientific, the world leader in serving science, (hereafter as “Thermo Fisher”) has earned CEO Cancer Gold Standard-China accreditation in China, recognizing the company’s commitment to reducing the risk of cancer for its employees and covered family members. Thermo Fisher is the 8th employer in China to receive the Gold Standard accreditation.

CEO Cancer Gold Standard-China accreditation is an employee wellness program that provides employers a framework for helping employees and their families lower their risk of cancer through healthy behaviors, regular screenings and access to high-quality care in China. Thermo Fisher earned its Gold Standard accreditation by meeting the five key requirements of this program.

The CEO Cancer Gold Standard-China is administered by the U.S.-based CEO Roundtable on Cancer, an international non-profit organization focused on cancer prevention and research that promotes improved patient outcomes. The CEO Roundtable on Cancer came to China in 2012 at the introduction of Dr. CHEN Zhu (陈竺), China’s then Health Minister. Since 2013, a task force team from government, academia and industry was formed to adapt the Gold Standard program into China’s specific environment. The CEO Cancer Gold Standard-China was made available in April 2014 free of any charge to all employers seeking accreditation.

“CEOs from many industries are keenly aware of the life-improving impact they can have on health and controlling healthcare costs when they address cancer and other chronic diseases,” said Dr. Martin Murphy, Jr., Chief Executive Officer, CEO Roundtable on Cancer. “I hope the leadership and commitment of Tony Acciarito and the team at Thermo Fisher in China will encourage other employers across all industries in China to become Gold Standard-China accredited.

To earn Gold Standard accreditation, an employer must establish programs to reduce cancer risk by taking concrete actions in five key areas: prohibiting tobacco use and supporting tobacco cessation efforts; promoting physical activity, healthy nutrition and weight management; providing health insurance options that include detecting cancer at its earliest stages, access to quality care and participation in cancer clinical trials; promoting employee awareness of these initiatives; and supporting the needs of cancer survivors in the workplace.

“While we are enabling our customers to make the world healthier, cleaner and safer, it is also our bounden duty to make workplace healthier for employees and their families.” said Tony Acciarito, President of Thermo Fisher Scientific China. “I am extremely proud and honored to be here representing Thermo Fisher to receive the Gold Standard-China accreditation. We will continue carrying out health promotion and education programs to improve employee health.”

Leveraging its sector expertise, Thermo Fisher provides employees with comprehensive health and wellness programs, including health check-ups, genetic test, vaccination, cancer care, NIPT, etc. Thermo Fisher hosts programs to support employees’ physical, mental, spiritual and emotional health through office exercises, healthy diet, tobacco-cessation, and healthy weight management programs. All these efforts are intended to provide 360-degree care to employees and their family members.

Cancer is currently the leading cause of death in China. There are about 3.12 million new cancer cases each year, an average of six people being diagnosed with some form of cancer every minute.

About The CEO Roundtable on Cancer

The CEO Roundtable on Cancer was founded in 2001, when former President George H.W. Bush challenged a group of executives to "do something bold and venturesome about cancer within your own corporate families." The CEOs responded by creating and encouraging the widespread adoption of the CEO Cancer Gold Standard™ which calls for organizations to evaluate their health benefits and workplace culture and take extensive, concrete actions in five key areas of health and wellness to address cancer in the workplace. Since the formation of the Gold Standard in the United States in 2006, now more than four and a half million employees and family members are benefiting from the vision and leadership of private, non-profit, and government employers who have chosen to become Gold Standard accredited.
